Happy Birthday Shouty Grandad

Me, Nanny and Shouty Grandad at Butlins, Ayr. circa 1976.

Today is Shouty Grandad's birthday. Nelly and I spent a lovely evening with him and Nanny, listening to him recounting all the dreadful things he used to get up to as a child. He grew up in a small village in Cumbria, where the fells meet the sea. The main industries were iron ore mining and farming.

He told us about his time at school, where, after having been to work on the farm and then out all night, up to mischief with his friends, he would get up after just a few hours sleep, wander into school, still covered in mud, cow muck and heaven knows what from their adventures. The teacher would walk in, sniff the air, locate Shouty Grandad and send him outside to clean his boots. Often he would spend all morning outside just mooching about, such was the teacher's indifference to children who chose not to learn.

He told us about the huge bell tent the boys used to put up on the 'Bankin' (an out of the way spot) in about March, capable of sleeping 20 people, it used to be there till September and the boys would sleep there if they had got themselves into hot water - to let the father cool off a bit before heading home. they would nick eggs, beans, beans, anything they could get hold of, set a fire by the tent and have a feed, boys being boys this would often get out of hand and the tent would be covered in, 'fried egg, boiled egg, beans, everything'.

He told us about the time he and his mates had played some awful prank on Mrs Cloudsdale (sister-in-law of uncle John?), she legged it after the boys, Shouty Grandad ran into his back garden where his saintly younger brother was just entering the outside lav. As Mrs Cloudsdale rounded the corner she heard the latch click in the lav, she put two and two together, yanked open the door, grabbed the 'culprit' off the toilet, spanked him soundly, then shoved him back in the toilet, satisfied that justice had been administered.

He tells of filling a dustbin with water and mud, leaning it up against the teachers home front door, knocking the knocker and running away - hilarity ensued.

He also described times when, after finishing work at the farm (after school) they would try to catch a carthorse to ride around, hitch to a sled and zoom down the snowy fells. Take a tin bath, used for watering the cattle, set it on the beck that ran through the farm and see how far they could get before the bath tipped over and they all got soaked then headed off to a barn or the woods and lit a fire to get dry.

He also recounted an occasion when he was working at the farm, bags and bags of seed potatoes had been delivered. These needed to be individually set in compost with 'eyes to the sky, roots to the earth'. It was very boring work, case after case of heavy mud and potatoes, several boys working in a couple of rooms that had been knocked together. You can imagine that boys will get bored after a time, then someone had the bright idea to switch the lights off and have a spud fight. Taters flying across the room, hitting heads, faces, body shots. No way they could shout out in pain, a sure fire way to get buzzed by 20 more potatoes. Then when the farmer came out to investigate the ruckus, they would quickly try to tidy up. The farmer could not have been fooled by the bloody noses and squashed potatoes all over the place.

I love listening to my dad tell tales of his misspent youth, he can make the pictures come alive with his gestures and language. I can imagine him being a bully and a rascal and a pain to the teachers. I'm glad to know him and proud to call him my dad (just don't tell him i said so, OK!). xxx

Happy Birthday Shouty Grandad. xxx

A Cracking Weekend

This weekend we were joined by Mr and Mr Fogg (they travel, A LOT). It was Mrs Fogg's birthday and Mr Fink and my wedding anniversary. On Friday night we chatted into the night about life, films and nonsense. On Saturday morning Mr Fink and The Fogg's went to the golf driving range while I took Little Fink horse riding. Everyone had a great time, despite Mrs Fogg ending up with 'wobbly hands'!
Saturday afternoon we went for a walk in the 'local' woods and enjoyed cakes and tea at the little cafe nearby, boy, it was hot! In the evening we took them to the restaurant where I proposed to Mr Fink 8 years ago, Alberto's. What a lovely place, beautiful food, wonderful staff (Alberto is a lot like Manuel from Fawlty Towers but with attitude!) and terrific company. We ate and drank our fill and mooched off into the night to enjoy drinks outside in the garden.
A thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing weekend with good friends. See you all in York, soon! xxx

A BIG Birthday

I had a wonderful birthday. Little Fink gave me a home made Hacker puppet, complete with moving arms and mouth. Mr Fink gave me a beautiful ring with my favourite stone in it. In the evening we went out to the local carvery for a meal with my mum and dad, my in-laws and my honorary sister, brother (Mrs Glum and Bambi) and their children Marsha and Bambino.
We had a wonderful night, mediocre food but great company and lots of laughing and fun.
Bambino gave me a keyring. Marsha gave me a Barbie doll, because she knows how much I LOVE BARBIE! Mrs Glum and Bambi gave me a lovely pearl choker and jewellery box.

I am a very lucky 40 year old! thank you all.

HSJ Awards 2009

Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the HSJ Awards at the Grosvenor Hotel in Park Lane, London. One of the doctors I work with had been nominated for an award for the system he has created to make the Radiology department work more efficiently.
We were collected by limousine, drank champagne all the way to the hotel (I learned a new skill - how to open and drink champagne in the back of a moving car), enjoyed a brief champagne reception and headed for the Grand Room for the event. My eye was caught by the beautiful chandeliers - stunning. dinner was delicious, asparagus starter and lamb main. For dessert we had lime creme brulee - hmmmmm yum.
Then we had an introduction from the Secretary of State for Health - scruffy man didn't even wear black tie. We were entertained by the host, James Nesbitt - all the awards took ages as all the women wanted a kiss from James! My boss met him outside and instead of getting his phone number, she told him off for smoking!
Unfortunately our doctor did not win the prize but we are all very proud of him and know how hard he and his friend worked on the project.
After the awards there was a charity sale of paintings, Dali, Matisse and Picasso no less and also a charity Casino in the top part of the Great Room.
I went for a wander and ended up standing next to a croupier, I was observing a lady playing next to me (poker) and thought she had a good hand by the standards that I play to, but she folded? I asked the croupier about the hand and she immediately knew that I had been playing Texas Hold 'Em poker, she was dealing Diamond Stud poker. So I learned how to play that too!
She was very kind and informative.
All in all I had a brilliant night, I'm not sure that my birthday meal on Wednesday at the local carvery is going to be so swanky but I'm sure we will have a good time!

Little Fink's Birthday Day Out

Mr Fink and Little Fink about 30ft up a tree about to jump off the platform into a cargo net. And she calls this a treat??
Little Fink asked if she could visit Go Ape for her birthday treat with some friends. she missed it when the Cubs went as she was unwell. We took, Mrs Glum, Bambi, Bambino and Marsha, J1 and his mum Lara Croft (she is fearless and will have a go at anything, must be the Aussie in her?)
They were fitted with harnesses and had a safety talk, after all, they were going to be 30 feet up in the air walking on wires, jumping off platforms and whizzing down zip wires.
Then they were off, they were so brave and careful and full of fun. None of them chickened out and all of them enjoyed it. The zip wires were quick and high, some of the landings were pretty hard but the men soon managed to brush the dirt off their backs (and their pride) and carried on! All in all everyone agreed it was a great excursion, several of them claiming it was good value for money and the best day out they had had for ages - and that was just the adults! We'll definitely go again.

It's Little Fink's birthday on Sunday so we can expect an early start in the morning. We've got Silver Surfer and Astral, Nanny and Shouty Grandad coming round tomorrow for dinner and cake.

(Hopefully next door's dog will have barked itself hoarse well before then!)

Help me out people?

Help me out people, I need SENSIBLE suggestions as to what i should do to mark my 40th birthday in December. Mr Fink is trying to get me to go wing walking and Little Fink wants me to go to the zoo and hand feed the tigers. Perhaps they don't want me to see 41?
Thank you.

Food for Thought - Happy Birthday Mr Fink

Today was Mr Fink's forty (ahem) th birthday! He was woken to presents and a huge Happy Birthday badge from Little Fink and a bacon and scrambled egg breakfast from me.

Little fink had asked me to book a table at Frankie & Benny's to celebrate and of course The Glum's were invited. Mr fink didn't know the venue for the meal until we were nearly there, he did know The glums were coming so we were a little puzzled as to why they were hiding in the cinema next door until we arrived? Odd!

We all enjoyed lovely food, sharing and trying everything. The 3 children (Marsha, Little Fink and Bambino) shared an enormous pud called The Godfather. It had chocolate brownie, cream, ice-cream, wafers, berries and all manner of things on it. Bambi had one all to himself and I bet him he wouldn't eat it all. I owe him 5p and he almost finished it before I'd eaten my slice of cheesecake! (Bambi is usually the one that things happen to, but today at was I who spilled my sauce down my front!) We had a lovely time, good conversation, good food, good friends.
Thank you and Happy Birthday Mr Fink (The Glums win the prize for the largest birthday gift - we could hardly shut the boot of the Finkmobile!)

Where the heck is it then?

It's Christmas. I've been doing my shopping online as i can't bear going to the shops. I bought a gift from Ebay for Little Fink. I waited a week and the item had not arrived. The seller had sent me an email to say he sent it on the 23rd Nov and the number to track the delivery is AB123456123456AB. HOORAY. What a superstar, how sensible a chap to track the delivery.
I typed the reference number in the Royal Mail tracker, "We attempted to deliver your item on 26th Nov. A 'While you were out' note was put through your door, please collect from your depot or arrange redelivery via the internet." note? what note?
I jumped on the internet and arranged for the item to be delivered to my local Post Office. I received the email confirming the redelivery request and was ready to pick up parcel on Dec 2 (my birthday).
I went to the local Post Office, "Hello, do you have a parcel for me?" Lady, "No, he hasn't been yet." Me, "Oh, what time does he come?" Her, ~"Anytime, can be anytime." Me - "Thank you, I'll come back tomorrow."
I left it a few days, went back. No parcel. yesterday (7th Dec) I went to the main depot, No parcel, no indication that the parcel had ever been in the depot, it is a ghost parcel. Also checked at the local Post Office. nope, nada.
I've emailed the seller, he is sympathetic to my plight. has sent me a scan of the receipt of postage and the tracking document.
I only hope they have sent it back to him and he will send it on eventually.
My favourite part of the story is the response I got from Customer Services for Royal mail. they don't publish a phone number so you can phone the depot and see if your parcel is there, you have to drive there and fight for the 3 (yes 3) parking spaces to get in to see if your parcel is there. The Customer Care lady took the details, said she will phone the depot, get them to investigate, they will call her and she (or someone from the Customer Care team) will call me back. "ooh lovely, thank you for being so helpful," says I, "What time do you think you'll call back?". " Oh about Friday."
Is it me?

It's not till NEXT year I tell you!

It's that time again, my Birthday! Why does everyone think I am 40 today? I'm 40 next year!

My birthday started well, I had to wait in the the washing machine guy as on Sunday - after the Buncefield Bash, I opened the washing machine and suddenly thought..."Why are my feet getting wet?". The darn thing wasn't emptying so we called in the man and he arrived, fixed the problem - a hairband causing the blockage! (That's £50 you owe me Little Fink).

I've been very lucky today, I've been given lots of cards with nice sentiments written in them, "good friend", "lots of fun", "yar hoo and a bucket of poo" (you know who you are 'Big Mac') and I was also given some lovely presents. Including a timeline of the various Doctor Who's from Little Fink and some beautiful jewellery from Mr Fink.

He is currently cooking me a birthday dinner and is smells super dooper!

I love birthdays! Yay me!

Mr Fink's Special Birthday

For all those people invited to Mr Fink's 'special' birthday party.
We have decided to offer a small prize for the LOUDEST shirt
worn (however briefly) at the party.
