For the last 6 weeks, 15 x 3rd years (year 9's) have been spending 2 hours on a Friday at the fire station learning the trade of the fire fighters, cutting roofs off cars with the hydraulic equipment, finding casualties in smoke filled rooms using breathing apparatus rolling out and gathering hose reels, climbing ladders, zooming around in their very own fire appliance and rescuing casualties from towers. they've come to know how heavy the kit the fire fighters use, is and how restrictive the uniforms can be, how back breaking rolling up a hose is and how dextrous you need to be, despite thick gloves, when shouldering a hose to get the water out.
The youngsters have really enjoyed it and I think the fire fighters did too.
'Well done' to the school for allowing the young people to participate in such a unique and valuable team building exercise and a mahoosive 'thank you' to the local fire fighters for giving up their time to train these young adults. they, and i really appreciate your work. Thank you.
