Former police chief recalls St Albans IRA bomb blast
KT and I were working at Watford police station that night. She as Enquiry Officer and I as Communications Assistant (answering the public's calls to the Police, recording information, assigning officers to jobs etc.)
As I recall we were about to hand over to the night shift at 10pm when the call went up from VH (Herts Police HQ) that all officers were to remain on duty till further notice due to the major incident.
I was worried as I knew Mr Fink was out in the pubs of St Albans. In the end all was well. Mr Fink safe and unaware of the drama. Two terrorists got what they justly deserved and, if police gossip is anything to go by, the police dogs and crows in the trees got an unexpected snack. (police humour is by It's very nature, macabre).
