Tonight I stayed late to finish some paperwork.
The staff had locked all the doors and turned out the lights. I had a choice, run the gauntlet of the dark scary corridor or walk up a flight of stairs, across a lobby and down a flight of stairs.
I usually take the dark scary corridor because my knees hate the stairs but tonight I headed for the steps.
I left my department, entered the key code to get out. Waited for the self closing door to lock behind me. I made my way to the second locked door, entered the keycode and waited for the door to close behind me with a soft swish.
I made my way up the stairs, turned 180 degrees on the landing and tackled the second set of steps. As I walked, I heard the unmistakeable sound of the door behind me swish closed. Again.
Now I know I closed that door. I also know there is no one else in the Department. So my brain is now racing.
I make my way towards the exit door, walking across the lobby I can see the door is locked, properly locked with a key. I think I can hear someone behind me but it must be my imagination.
I get to the door, yep, it's locked and I can't get out.
I gingerly turn round, only to find a tall, dark figure a few metres away... it was the hospital Security Guard.
He realised I was locked in so followed me to let me out.
I'm just glad I didn't meet him in the dark scary corridor!
