I went to primary school in London Colney, Hertfordshire. The deputy headmaster was a man called Mr Lewis, the pupils used to call him 'Smiler' because he would talk to you with a smile on his lips but not in his eyes. Very creepy.
Needless to say we were all terrified of him.
One day my friend Carolyn and I were running in the cooridor, behind us came a deep authorative voice, "YOU BOY."
We stopped dead still and got a telling off. We were expecting to get lines as a punishment but Old Smiler was more creative. He told us to learn 'If' by Rudyard Kipling and recite it to him in his office at the end of the week.
What a punishment.
Despite my intorduction to the poem, I till like it.
